A bathroom remodel is the most sequence-dependent job in a house. Every trade builds on the one before it, and most of what separates a remodel that still looks right in ten years from one that doesn't is invisible by the time the room is finished. Knowing the order makes it much easier to judge a quote.
It starts with protection and demolition. Floors along the route get covered, the rest of the house gets sealed off from dust, and the old bathroom comes out in order — fixtures, then tile, then whatever the tile was attached to. Demolition is also discovery: this is when the state of the framing and the subfloor becomes visible, and an honest remodeler shows you what they find rather than covering it up.
Then the structure gets corrected. Walls that were never straight get furred true, framing that was cut up by past work gets repaired, and blocking goes in where the new vanity, grab bars or wall-hung fixtures will need something solid to bite into. This is the cheapest moment there will ever be to fix these things.
Wet areas get built next, and this is the step worth asking any contractor about: what goes UNDER the tile. A shower is a waterproofing system that happens to have tile on it — the pan, the slope, the membrane and the niche all have to be right before a single tile is set, because no grout line is waterproof on its own.
Surfaces follow in order: sheetrock hung and taped, texture matched to the rest of the house, then tile, then paint, then the finish carpentry and fixtures. Done in that order, each trade covers the previous one's fasteners and edges. Done out of order, you get paint on new tile and trim scribed around crooked walls.
