Flooring on a Houston Slab: Why Prep Decides Everything

Jun 12, 2026 Dannys Tile and Remodeling

Most Houston-area homes sit on a concrete slab poured over clay soil — soil that swells in a wet spring and shrinks in an August drought. Slabs move with it, a little, for the life of the house. A new floor that ignores this is a new floor with a countdown running.

The first job on any flooring project here is reading the slab. High spots get ground down and low spots get filled with a leveling compound, because every plank format has a flatness tolerance and Houston slabs routinely exceed it. Skipping this step is how new floors end up with hollow spots, bouncy seams and joints that open.

Moisture is the second reading. Concrete breathes ground moisture upward, more in this climate than most, and different flooring materials tolerate that differently. This decides what underlayment or moisture barrier the floor needs — a detail that is invisible on day one and decisive by year three.

Transitions are where a flooring job shows its care. Doorways, the meeting line with existing tile, stair nosings, and the reducers between rooms are cut and fitted pieces, not afterthoughts. Stairs in particular — treads and risers clad to match the floor — are close-tolerance work that separates a finished-looking job from a passable one.
